Commissioning Furniture

Commissioning custom furniture is a collaborative effort between you and the maker. It is a personal and rewarding undertaking that can result in a piece of furniture that couldn't have existed if either you or the craftsman were absent from the process. Commissioning a piece of furniture affords you, the buyer, the opportunity to have that singularly unique item, built to your specifications and built to last. Quality and craftsmanship to be passed down through the generations.

There are a series of simple steps to take in commissioning a piece of custom furniture. First, we discuss your idea, either by phone, in the studio, or at your home. What type of piece are you looking for (table, standing cabinet, dresser, armoire, etc.)? What is it's function in your space? Will this piece match or compliment an existing style? What dimensions would you like your piece to be? Sketches of your idea, or photos of similar items can be helpful. If we don't meet in your home, pictures of where this piece will go will be helpful in the design process.

Next, I will sketch 3-5 ideas and provide them to yo, usually within a week to ten days. You can have further influence in the final piece during the review of the sketches. I can also provide a "ballpark" estimate of the costs at the point and a general idea of when it can be finished.

Once you make your final decision on your design, I will produce a set of full scale drawings. For this, I require a designing fee of on average $150.00 (less depending on size of custom piece). This is a sliding fee that is based on the amount of time it takes to produce full scale sketches. It is non-refundable, but will be rolled into the purchase price of your piece.

Upon completion of the full scale drawings, I will contact you before proceeding. This will allow for confirmation of the designed piece, specific purchase price, timeline, and receipt of a fifty percent deposit. Once full scale drawings are accepted and deposits, no changes can be made to design plan by client without incurring additional fees. Deposits are non-refundable.

Delivery

Pickup or delivery is possible. If the piece is to be shipped, actual crating, shipping costs and insurance will be at an additional cost to purchaser. We will research shipping options to provide for the safest and most economical means available.
